A shout-out to the South Van Big Band and their performance on Nov. 17th, as well as jazz music all hour. Music from Bill King, Francois Houle 5 + 1, Harris Eisenstadt, Roger Chong, etc.
Yes, it was pouring in my neighbourhood, and worse, it was snowing up in Burnaby Mountain (where the studio is located), but I braved the elements so that I can bring you great jazz like Chong's "Memories of Venice," King's couple of terrific pieces, Eisenstadt's "Song for Sara," and more.

August 20, 2012 - Vancouver @ Salem-Keizer - Taylor Cole celebrates his 23rd birthday - with KP Wee calling the action
One of the most memorable moments of the Vancouver Canadians' 2012 Northwest League Championship season came on Monday, August 20th, when RHP Taylor Cole threw an absolute gem while pitching on his 23rd birthday against the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes at Volcanoes Stadium.
Here's the action from the bottom of the fifth inning onwards, with fill-in broadcaster KP Wee bringing you the play-by-play.

I'm back at CJSF today with another edition of Jumbalaya bringing music from up-and-coming artists to the airwaves. Last week, Toronto's Roger Chong was in the Top 30 on the station's charts, so that's terrific, and to celebrate, I had four of his tunes in today's show.
Also, there's music from Melissa Lauren, Samantha Martin and the Haggard, Joshua Hyslop, and more.

July 26, 2012 - Eugene @ Vancouver - Derrick Chung's Walk-Off RBI - with KP Wee calling the action
One of the most memorable games at Scotiabank Field during the Vancouver Canadians' 2012 Northwest League Championship season took place on Thursday, July 26th, when the C's defeated the Eugene Emeralds 1-0 on 2B Derrick Chung's walk-off sacrifice fly.
It turned out to be a big victory as the C's would eventually hold off Eugene for the second-half pennant en route to their 2012 championship.
Here is the action from the ninth inning that afternoon, including Chung's walk-off RBI, with fill-in broadcaster KP Wee bringing you the play-by-play.

I was back at the CJSF Studio doing a live show for two hours as I was supposed to get updates from downtown from the staffers covering the Pride Parade. I never got any updates so I just did my best in the studio throughout the two hours with stats and facts about the event while playing a mix of dance music (you can tell as I rambled on for eight minutes at the opening of Part 4).

A little bit of a 'doubleheader today as I had a pre-recorded Jumbalaya show on this morning at 9:00 a.m.
I then followed that up with a live broadcast of the Vancouver Canadians - Salem-Keizer Volcanoes game played at Scotiabank Field, calling the play-by-play of the final four-and-a-half innings. The team is 4-0 this season when I'm in the broadcast booth, and 4-1 last year, meaning the C's are 8-1 with me doing play-by-play.

I've missed back-to-back episodes of Jumbalaya with CJSF Radio, but something very exciting happened on Thursday, July 26th, as I was asked to fill in from the top of the fifth inning onwards for the Vancouver Canadians-Eugene Emeralds baseball game!
I had the opportunity to call the final four innings of the Canadians' 1-0 victory, which was made possible by Derrick Chung on a walk-off RBI sacrifice fly.

Roger Chong with KP Wee - Smitten by the Written - June 6, 2012
For today's show, I had the opportunity to speak with Toronto composer/jazz guitarist Roger Chong. We discussed his latest album, "Send A Little Love," and also talked about how Roger's music-writing style has evolved over the past few years, from lyrics and vocals with a rock-pop/blues theme to now mainly jazz.
I also shared a couple of new tunes from Roger's new album - "Memories of Venice" and "Intimate Strangers" - as well as an old song from his first album "In the Beginning" titled "Maybe" featuring him on vocals.

This Week's Jumbalaya
I've been fortunate enough to have understanding bosses over the past four months--I'm looking at you, Ron and Heather!--that I've been able to sneak out of work to do my weekly radio program at CJSF.
This week, however, due to the amount of workload, I'm needed in the office on Thursday morning. Not to worry, though, as I've pre-recorded the Jumbalaya show and it will air in its regularly scheduled time on Thursday! I'll admit, it was tricky to say things like, "The auction ends today, Thursday, May 17th," when it in fact wasn't the 17th. Real tricky! Will post the links when it airs this week.
This will be the first of many pre-recorded Jumbalaya shows. I do it with Smitten by the Written, so it's not a biggie.

Highlights on today's show:
A big boo-boo made in the second half. Yikes. Pressed the wrong button.
A little shout-out to Katie Rox for the poll she conducted on Facebook, where she asked which one Katie Rox song everybody likes. By my unofficial tally, it seems "Airplane" got the most votes, so that's what I played in honour of that.
Also, a little shout-out to Chris Ronald for his May 13th Mother's Day gig at the Tipper.

The following week, on Wednesday, May 9th, at 4pm Eastern (1pm Pacific), we’ll bring you a recording of the Wayde Compton poetry reading performed in the “Lunch Poems @ SFU” series from mid-April. The poetry reading, which took place on April 18th at the SFU Harbour Centre in downtown Vancouver, lasted an hour, but for radio purposes the recording has been condensed to half an hour to fit into the “Smitten by the Written” segment.
Questions such as the following will be discussed:
As a writer, do I read more than I write, or the other way around?
What are examples of showing the characters’ personalities through
actions and interactions?
What do you do if you’re not sure whether to use the first or third

Poet and Writer Wayde Compton with KP Wee - April 18, 2012
On today's "Smitten by the Written" program on CJSF 90.1 FM, we aired an interview I conducted with Vancouver-based writer Wayde Compton, who coincidentally was doing a live public poetry reading at SFU Harbour Centre at the same time the program was aired!
The interview with Wayde, which was pre-recorded a week earlier, lasts about 32 minutes. He spoke about the "Lunch Poems @ SFU" series as well as what he's currently working on as far as his writing is concerned, and how he got started in his writing career.
The first part of the interview can be heard here.
The second part can be heard here.

Jumbalaya with KP Wee - April 13, 2012
A special shout-out to my bosses, Ron and Heather, for allowing me to sneak out of work early to do a Jumbalaya show in Burnaby. Thanks, guys, for being super flexible with me for the last three months - it's great to have terrific bosses! Also, received an email from Heather during the show, but didn't want to read it on air!
Also on the program today, some discussion about a company which was irresponsible with Twitter. No, not the LA Kings' tweet of "To everyone outside of BC, you're welcome," but a different company. Besides, I loved the Kings' tweet following their Game 1 victory over Vancouver.
Some follow-up on the Rick Jessup beer story too...
This was probably the first time in a long time that I didn't have any Jim Cuddy or Roger Chong music on the program... but I'm super happy that Roger's new album was featured in Tandem Magazine this week. Way to go, Roger!

Author Camy Tang with KP Wee - March 21, 2012
I got a chance to speak with author Camy Tang on today's program. We discuss a bit about her new novel series "Protection for Hire" as well as how she got ideas for her "Sushi Series" featuring four cousins who had to fight the stigma of the infamous family title "Oldest Single Female Cousin."
She also talks about how she enjoys giving writing tips to her readers.

Chris Ronald with KP Wee - March 21, 2012
Vancouver-based singer/songwriter Chris Ronald discusses his move from England to Canada, as well as his songwriting and teaching. He's also part of an exciting crowdfunding project for his next album in 2013, which he shares with us.
Chris also shares some funny anecdotes, including his getting bored in class and an old photograph of him with a guitar. In this piece, I included a couple of his songs, Sunshine and Sweatshop Blues, from the album Turning Tides along with the interview. For more information about his upcoming gigs, click here.

Katie Rox with KP Wee - CJSF 90.1 FM
Here is an interview with Katie Rox.
The interview was recorded back in January, and since then, there have been a couple of updates about Katie, which I've updated in the segment. One of those updates is quite interesting: With help from fans on Twitter, she wrote a love song on Valentine's Day, which she posted here.

Adrian Brijbassi with KP Wee - CJSF 90.1 FM
Even though I'm juggling a full-time job with a few other things, I had a chance to produce the following show for CJSF 90.1 FM, an interview with Vacay.ca's Adrian Brijbassi, which aired today.
Here is the interview.
Adrian shares an anecdote about the restaurant in New Orleans which sets a table for a ghost named Antoine, and he also reads out a couple of award-winning articles, "Chasing the Big Five" and "Beauty and the Beach."
I also got Adrian to enlighten the listeners about some myths regarding travel writing.

Jan. 29, 2012: Jumbalaya with KP on CJSF 90.1 FM
This week, I conducted inteviews with Kenya Kondo, Roger Chong, Cheryl Thibideau, and Katie Rox, but I chose not to air any of these interviews in my Jumbalaya show today. Those interviews will likely run in a few weeks on Smitten by the Written. However, next week's Smitten progam (Feb. 1) will be on Robbie Burns, and the one after that will be on the World Literature event--both of which I covered--so it'll be awhile before we listen to those interviews.

KP Wee with James Hill (repeat program) - CJSF Jan. 25, 2012
The interview with James Hill was re-aired on CJSF 90.1 FM on Wednesday, Jan. 25th. Catch it here.
Meanwhile, that same day, I was down at the Harbour Centre to cover the historic Robert Burns poetry marathon, which lasted four hours and nine minutes! Even the CTV camera guy was there too to cover the event, and CTV featured it on its nightly newscast as well. As for my coverage, it will be aired next week.

Interview with SFU instructor Shiraz Ramji - CJSF 90.1 FM - KP Wee
I had the pleasure of speaking with SFU instructor Shiraz Ramji in studio about his passion for poetry. Here is the interview.
One funny thing was that I'd mentally prepared for this interview and knew the questions I was going to ask, but two minutes before the interview was to start, Shiraz informed me that I shouldn't be calling him "Professor Ramji" as I had been throughout our email correspondences. So, I had the added pressure of addressing him by his first name, and there were several times I stumbled during the interview because I had to remember to call him "Shiraz" and not "Professor Ramji"! :-)
Here is the second half of the show, where I did some public service announcements.

Here's the 11:00 to 11:30 am segment of Jumbalaya on CJSF 90.1 FM.
I shared that embarrassing story about my New Year's Day 2012 at the coffee shop downtown. Yikes. Not the best way to start off the new year, but oh well, at least it was something to talk about!
Here's the 11:30 to 12:00 pm segment. Great music!
