Programming update: Smitten by the Written

We have a date nailed down for the Adrian Brijbassi interview for CJSF 90.1 FM’s “Smitten by the Written” program, and it will be airing on Wednesday, May 2nd, at 4pm Eastern (1pm Pacific) as he and I will be discussing the topic of sports writing.

Questions such as the following will be discussed:

As a writer, do I read more than I write, or the other way around?

What are examples of showing the characters’ personalities through actions and interactions?

What do you do if you’re not sure whether to use the first or third person?

The following week, on Wednesday, May 9th, at 4pm Eastern (1pm Pacific), we’ll bring you a recording of the Wayde Compton poetry reading performed in the “Lunch Poems @ SFU” series from mid-April. The poetry reading, which took place on April 18th at the SFU Harbour Centre in downtown Vancouver, lasted an hour, but for radio purposes the recording has been condensed to half an hour to fit into the “Smitten by the Written” segment.

Poet and Writer Wayde Compton with KP Wee - April 18, 2012

On today's "Smitten by the Written" program on CJSF 90.1 FM, we aired an interview I conducted with Vancouver-based writer Wayde Compton, who coincidentally was doing a live public poetry reading at SFU Harbour Centre at the same time the program was aired!

The interview with Wayde, which was pre-recorded a week earlier, lasts about 32 minutes. He spoke about the "Lunch Poems @ SFU" series as well as what he's currently working on as far as his writing is concerned, and how he got started in his writing career.

The first part of the interview can be heard here.
The second part can be heard here.

Coming up on "Smitten by the Written"...

I had the opportunity to pre-record interviews with Vancouver-based writer Wayde Compton and travel journalist Adrian Brijbassi of Vacay.ca for the CJSF 90.1 FM program, "Smitten by the Written."

Compton, who wil be the featured poet in the "Lunch Poems @ SFU" series on Wednesday, April 18th at the SFU Harbour Centre in downtown Vancouver, spoke with me about his writing career.

Brijbassi, who is a returning guest on the show, discusses sports writing and shares another excerpt from his novel-in-progress, "Triumph the Lion."

The two interviews will be aired in the next couple of weeks on CJSF 90.1 FM, so stay tuned!

Jumbalaya with KP Wee - April 13, 2012

A special shout-out to my bosses, Ron and Heather, for allowing me to sneak out of work early to do a Jumbalaya show in Burnaby. Thanks, guys, for being super flexible with me for the last three months - it's great to have terrific bosses! Also, received an email from Heather during the show, but didn't want to read it on air!

Also on the program today, some discussion about a company which was irresponsible with Twitter. No, not the LA Kings' tweet of "To everyone outside of BC, you're welcome," but a different company. Besides, I loved the Kings' tweet following their Game 1 victory over Vancouver.

Some follow-up on the Rick Jessup beer story too...

This was probably the first time in a long time that I didn't have any Jim Cuddy or Roger Chong music on the program... but I'm super happy that Roger's new album was featured in Tandem Magazine this week. Way to go, Roger!

A Jumbalaya show this morning before heading off to work:

A special shout-out to Rick from Toronto for submitting the beer story in the second half of the show! Also, a reminder in the first half about Vancouver-based songwriter Chris Ronald's gigs on the 13th (Cuppa Joy Coffee House) and 14th (The Naam).

A fun show today; I shared a couple of bus stories on air, and even talked about the stories about Wyoming and "My dog ate my tickets."

In the last half-hour, I also shared some news about Chris Ronald's new gigs coming up in April, and music by Kenya Kondo (Train), Roger Chong (Boo's Bossa), and Current Swell (Long Time Ago).

"Lunch Poems @ SFU" with KP Wee - April 4, 2012

It's a pleasure for me to narrate the recording of the inaugural event of "Lunch Poems @ SFU" series, which took place on Wednesday, March 28th, 2012. This series will be held once a month at SFU Harbour Centre in downtown Vancouver.

The inaugural event featured Vancouver's Poet Laureate Evelyn Lau, as well as guest poet Daniela Elza, who read some of their favourite poems to the public.

The second of the "Lunch Poems @ SFU" series will take place on April 18th, featuring Wayde Compton.
